The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Region 9 has marked another significant milestone in its efforts to bolster the aquaculture industry in the region with the successful inaugural harvest of Bangus (milkfish) from the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Marine Fish Cage Project in Barangay Digon, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur. The event took place on the mornings of March 13 and 15, 2024 showcased the fruitful collaboration between government agencies and local communities in advancing sustainable fisheries practices.

The two 10-meter diameter HDPE cages operated by Barangay Digon Fisherfolk Association yielded an impressive total volume of 9.7769 tons of bangus, grossing Php 1,239,147.00. The project which commenced in October 2023, is a testament to the commitment of DA-BFAR 9 and the LGU of Margosatubig to promote sustainable aquaculture practices. It also highlights the dedication and hard work of the fisherfolk association beneficiaries, who have embraced new technologies to enhance their livelihoods.

As DA-BFAR 9 continues to spearhead initiatives to enhance the aquaculture industry and through sustainable practices and innovative technologies like the HDPE Marine Fish Cage Project, Zamboanga Peninsula is poised to achieve greater heights in aquaculture production, ensuring a steady supply of fish for local consumption and contributing to the overall economic growth of the region.
