Pursuant to DA Special Order no. 88, Series of 2005 known as the β€œFisherfolk Director’s Program for a More Strengthened Partnership in Fisheries Management”, the Department of Agriculture- Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Regional Office 9 recently conducted elections for the CY 2024 Regional Fisherfolk Director (RFD) on March 7, 2024, in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. The program aims to dramatize and popularize fisherfolk empowerment and their vital role as government partners in poverty alleviation and food security programs.

Among the five fisherfolk representatives competing for the position were Ms. Winnie L. Tagapan of Zamboanga del Norte, Ms. Sonia Balansag of Zamboanga del Sur, Mr. Eric Tan of Zamboanga Sibugay, Ms. Lilia M. NuΓ±o of Zamboanga City, and Mr. Abraham D. Sahidjan of Isabela City, Basilan. Following the election process, Ms. Lilia M. NuΓ±o of Zamboanga City emerged victorious, securing her place as the newly elected CY 2024 RFD for Region 9.

Ms. NuΓ±o is set to be officially installed as the CY 2024 RFD by BFAR 9 Regional Director Al-zath K. Kunting in May, coinciding with the annual celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month. Additionally, she will participate in a series of immersion activities designed to familiarize her with the dynamics of BFAR office operations.

Ms. NuΓ±o being elected signifies not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the commitment to fostering collaboration and empowerment within the fisheries sector. As she assumes her new role, Ms. NuΓ±o is assured to contribute significantly to the advancement of fisheries management and the welfare of fisherfolk in the region.
