The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) 9 through the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division (RFTFCD) has recently organized a three-day Capability Training on Responsible Technology with Emphasis on Tuna Handline Fishing Operation and Management on February 29, 2024, at the Conference Hall, Municipal Building, Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The primary objective of this training was to enhance the skills of the members of the Suba Batang Taguisian Fisherfolk Association in sustainable Tuna Handline Fishing, as the association prepares to operationalize the FB DA BFAR HL015 – a 62-footer fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) Tuna Handline Fishing Boat that was awarded to the association on January 18, 2024.

The training program included theoretical lectures and engaging group exercises that covered topics, such as the overview of the Philippine Fisheries, Classification of Fishing Gears and Methods, Banned Aquatic Wildlife, Relevant Environmental Laws and Sustainable Livelihood Practices, Basic Safety of life at sea for Small Scale Fisherfolk, and the Economic Analysis of Tuna Handline Fishing. Additionally, the participants were given practical demonstrations on Basic Knots and Splicing, Fabrication and Installation of Tuna Handline, actual fishing demonstrations at sea with hands-on operation of the fishing boat and also featured Basic Simple Bookkeeping exercises.

The FB DA BFAR HL015 is one of the FRP Tuna Handline Fishing Boats that DA-BFAR has committed as part of the bureau’s Capacitating Municipal Fisherfolk Program. The program aims to support small-scale fisherfolk through poverty alleviation initiatives. The fishing vessel is a modernized technology that is expected to help fisherfolk communities to increase catch production and improve their economic condition. The successful completion of this capability training marks a significant step forward for the Suba Batang Taguisian Fisherfolk Association and underscores DA-BFAR’s commitment to empowering local fisherfolk and promoting sustainable fishing practices in the region.
