PRESIDENT DUTERTE GRACES TAPATAN: GOBYERNO AT MAMAYAN IN BASILAN
On October 10, 2016, as part of his 100 days celebration as chief executive officer of the country, the President himself, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the distribution of several agri-fishery projects of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to the farmers and fishermen of Basilan during the “Tapatan: Gobyerno at Mamamayan” program held at the Lamitan Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative (LARBECO) compound in Barangay Limo-ok, Lamitan City, Basilan.
For the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) headed by Commodore Eduardo B. Gongona, PCG (Ret.), seventy (70) units of motorized fiberglass boats complete with engine, fishing nets and hook and line were awarded and distributed among several beneficiaries from different towns of Basilan while the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the secretary himself, Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol gave seven (7) units of four-wheel drive farm tractors and several other agri-fishery equipment, seeds and seedlings. PhP 5 million worth of checks were also divided among different recipients and local government units (LGUs).
President Duterte promised the farmers and fisherfolk in the province of Basilan that he will give his full support to them especially in terms of provision of subsidies that can be used to support them in their daily living. He also warned the fisherfolk to stop dynamite fishing as this can destroy the marine life and made mentioned about the hardship brought by coconut pests to the farmers of Basilan.
The President also encouraged the people in Basilan to talk to the government to resolve their problems and hoped to bring peace to Mindanao by stamping out crime and illegal drugs. Lastly, he also promised to help start on the upgrading of the local hospital and build additional school infrastructures including the energy infrastructures if the funds would allow it.
